Electronic Document Management System

On 26 January 2007, the Crime Section of the Legal Aid Department (LAD) implemented an Electronic Document Management System (eDMS) for the handling of criminal cases. The system enables LAD to keep and maintain electronic copies of the trial and appeal bundles received from the prosecution / the court. At present, assigned counsel and solicitors would return the bundles to LAD after the conclusion of the cases even though they should be kept by the assigned solicitors as handling solicitors. With the implementation of eDMS, LAD has revised the procedures in the handling of returned bundles from assigned counsel and solicitors. Assigned counsel will continue with their practice of sending bundles to LAD after the conclusion of the case for the purpose of fee assessments. Upon payment to counsel and in line with standard practice, LAD will pass on the returned bundles from assigned counsel to assigned solicitors for their safe custody. Assigned solicitors are reminded to keep the trial / appeal bundles in their safe custody after the conclusion of the case.
