Under
the three-year Healthy Ageing Campaign launched
by Elderly Commission, a Community Partnership
Scheme has been organized to rally to multi-sectoral
participation in the promotion of Healthy Ageing
by granting funds to relevant and innovative projects.
This
resource book aims to provide the background information
on physical health of elderly, so as to facilitate
planning of programmes by interested organizations,
including practice of healthy life-styles such
as balanced diet, regular exercises and abstinence
from smoking, as well as the principles of health
screening and drug management

of “Resource Book on Psychosocial Health Promotion
in the Elderly”(Traditional
Chinese Only)
About this book …
Objectives: In order to promote and raise the
awareness on the understanding of psychosocial
health of elderly in the community, Elderly Health
Services (EHS) has produced a resource book on
psychosocial health (「身心康健乐颐年 --- 促进长者社交心理健康资料手册」).
This resource book integrates the experiences
and knowledge of doctors, clinical psychologists
and occupational therapists from EHS. The resource
book is suitable for elders, formal as well as
informal carers (e.g. family members and relatives)
for reference and improving knowledge on psychosocial
health among elders.
Focus:
To enhance the knowledge and understanding
on elder’s mental health for both elders and
carers by analyzing the physical and psychosocial
changes that accompany aging, such as changes
in physical appearance and functioning, cognitive
abilities, mental problems (e.g. depression
and dementia) and life events (e.g. retirement,
grief and losses, care-giving stress).
To provide practical tips on promoting positive
attitude to cope with these changes of aging
so as to establish harmonious relationship and
communication between elders and carers.
Highlights are made in the special sections
which are especially useful for counselors for
reference in dealing with similar cases encountered.
Real cases are used for illustration and
sharing.
Provides information on community resources
and services for reference and self-help purpose.
There are a total of three chapters.
Chapter One — “Happy Aging” (「做个开心快乐人」) introduces
the commonly seen physical and psychological changes
and adjustment problems of Hong Kong elders (including
physical appearance, sleep pattern, cognitive
functioning …) and practical tips and coping strategies
are suggested for promoting positive aging. Myths
on aging are also addressed and clarified.
Chapter Two — “Special Topics” (专题分享) mainly
explores the commonly seen mental and psychosocial
problems in aging with real case illustration.
The topics include “Adjustment to retirement:
“ Coping with chronic illnesses”, “Grief and loss”,
“Depression” and “Dementia”.
Chapter Three — “Social Resources” introduces
the community resources and services for further
information and self-help. The appendix provides
tools for self-assessment, and includes “Checklist
for self-assessment on depressive symptoms”, “Suicidal
symptoms” and “Checklist for self-assessment on
stress”.

The Healthy Recipes Cookbook recently released by the Elderly Health Service of the Department of Health is an answer to the call from those w ho have been looking for a credible cookbook on healthy Chinese dishes. The Healthy Recipes Cookbook is an English translation of the popular Chinese cookbook compiled by the Department of Health, of which over 30,000 copies have been sold since it was first published in 2005. Readers will find the same features that have made the Chinese version so popular: 36 recipes ranging from main dishes to desserts and snacks, nutritional analysis for each recipe, and tips on diet modification for the diabetic, hypertensive and persons with gout. The Healthy Recipes Cookbook is now available for sale at bookstores at the same price as the Chinese version: $38 only.
