The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has published "Hong Kong Energy End-use Data 2008 " which provide information on the consumption data of the different energy fuel types and the specific purposes for which these fuels are consumed, e.g. space-conditioning, lighting, cooking, etc. The data provide a better understanding of energy consumption pattern and usage in Hong Kong. The year 2008 marks the 60th anniversary of EMSD

The year 2008 marks the 60th anniversary of EMSD Over the years we have grown with Hong Kong. Our work today is wide-ranging and diverse. We provide multi-faceted E&M engineering services to more than 100 government departments and public bodies; enforce safety legislations with regard to gas, electricity, lifts and escalators, aerial ropeways, amusement rides and railways and provide related regulatory services. We also promote energy efficiency.

New Cable Colour Code

New Cable Colour Code From 1 July 2007, new colour cables can be used in fixed electrical installations in Hong Kong. EMSD has launched a webcorner where the trade can find updated information on the new cable colour code. There is also a training suite which provides an exercise on configuration of the new cable colour code for registered electrical workers.

Voluntary Registration Scheme for Vehicle Mechanics

With a view to enhancing the standard of the local vehicle maintenance trade, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department is implementing a voluntary registration scheme for vehicle mechanics. Starting from 4 January 2007, vehicle mechanics in possession of necessary qualification and/or experience may apply through this Scheme for becoming registered vehicle mechanics so that their qualification and competence will gain recognition.
